Overview
Just east of downtown, the Greenwood-Coxwell neighbourhood is a popular spot for families and young professionals due to its proximity and accessibility to the city centre and the nearby communities of Leslieville and The Beaches. This largely residential and commercial area is also dotted with parkettes and borders Woodbine Park on the south side.
Little India is located in the Greenwood-Coxwell neighbourhood on Gerrard Street East, between Coxwell Avenue and Greenwood Avenue and can be reached by transit via the Coxwell bus south from Coxwell subway station.
Little India is home to the Gerrard India Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest South Asian ethnic market in North America, and certainly one of the most colourful and tastiest neighbourhoods in the city. Browse textile shops full of colourful silks to make the perfect sari, or buy vibrant ready-to-wear clothing at import clothing shops. Find bargains on exotic home furnishings, jewellery and art from South Asia. There's plenty to keep you busy and that's before you even get to the Bazaar's main attraction - the food.
The food alone makes this Toronto experience a must for any visitor. You'll find a mix of eateries featuring delicacies from North and South India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Savour fresh tandoori chicken or rich masala dosai at an authentic "chat house". And as many traditional meals contain no meat, vegetarians will feel more than satisfied with the range of delicious options. In summer, the area is enlivened by the Festival of South Asia, a two-day extravaganza of music, dance, tasty treats and more. Then in November, hundreds of twinkling tea lights bathe the neighbourhood in a warm, magical glow as Diwali, the Festival of Lights takes over.
No matter what time of year you choose to visit Little India, your senses will be dazzled by the vibrant colours and aromas.
Homes
Greenwood-Coxwell is one of the east end's most desirable and affordable neighbourhoods for young families as the majority of its housing stock is comprised of semi-detached homes and apartment dwellings five or more floors in height.
The real estate prices in the Beaches and Riverdale left the realm of the reasonable long ago, but Greenwood-Coxwell, plunked right between them, is a much more realistic option.
The perks extend beyond the lower prices: the commercial strip on Danforth Avenue is home to coffee shops, artisanal grocers and bakeries. Down in Little India, cool new restaurants and coffee shops are attracting foot traffic.
In the middle of the neighbourhood is an expanse of brick semis and detached homes, all arranged around Monarch Park, with its outdoor pool and off-leash area. And even though the neighbourhood sale prices lag behind the ritzier areas that surround it, Greenwood-Coxwell shares many of their amenities, with great TTC coverage and easy access to Leslieville's boutiques and brunch spots.
